The main function of the mechanical seal is to avoid leaks between the rotating machine (pump, agitator, etc.) and its environment. It creates a barrier between what is inside the machine and a fluid. The mechanical seal allows the pump to move fluids, keeps contaminates outside the machine, and contain pressure.
